We at D&P Cricket would like to wish everyone the very best for 2013!!

2012 brought about some of D&P’s greatest achievements on and off the cricket field and we’d like to acknowledge some of them. Firstly- to you our valued customer/member, D&P would like to thank you for your ongoing support over the past year and we look forward to hearing from you in 2013.

Henry Davids (Nashua Titans & SA T20)

Henry Davids had a busy start to the season. In September he was appointed as the Nashua Titans new captain for the four-day Sunfoil Series and October saw him impress on the World Stage as he finished as one of the top 5run-scorers in the Champions League T20 extravaganza.  Through consistent performances and record breaking innings like his 166 against The Knights in the Momentum Cup, Davids earned himself a well deserved call-up to the National T20 side and he did not disappoint. Henry went on to score 143 runs at an average of 48 including 2 magnificent half centuries in his 3 innings (S/R 140) versus New Zealand. These performances earned himself the KFC T20 Man of The Series award against the Kiwis.

Vernon Philander (Nashua Cape Cobras & SA Test team)

I think we all have run out of words to describe some of his remarkable feats over the past year but let’s relive it again. Philander has come through a barrage of criticism since his call up to the Test side in November 2011 against Australia but ever since has silenced even the worst. In June of 2012 Philander went on to achieve every accomplishment any bowler could have dreamed of in a cricket career. Here are some of his accolades beside his record breaking feats:- CSA Cricketer of The Year, CSA Test Cricketer of The Year, CSA Fans Player of the Year and Nominee for ICC World Cricketer of the Year 2012. But to top it all Vernon went on to win the biggest accolade in South African sport “SA SPORTMAN OF THE YEAR for 2012”, let’s not mistake this award with the “SA Sports Star of the Year” which went to Olympic swimmer Chad le Clos. Philander ended the year as the leading wicket taker in Tests with 43 wickets at an average of 17. This saw him climb to World Number 2 on the ICC Rankings behind fellow Proteas team mate Dale Steyn. I can tell you 2013 has not changed a thing as the Venomous Vern destroyed the Kiwis in the opening Test at Newlands with figures of 5/7 and 2/76 which earned himself Man of The Match. What a start to 2013 for the BIG VERN!!

Rory Kleinveldt (Nashua Cape Cobras, SA T20, SA ODI & SA Test team)

Perhaps one of the most consistent & powerful all-rounders on the domestic scene Rory Kleinveldt is no stranger to the National set up in the ODI and T20 Squads. This past season saw Kleinveldt earn a call up to the World Number 1 Test team The Proteas. His inclusion to the squad as back up for the world’s leading trio was a huge honour for Kleinveldt. He captured some valuable wickets on the tour down under which contributed to South Africa’s second successive Test Series win against the Aussies in Australia thus securing our world number 1 status heading home against the Kiwis.

Domestic Cricket (Momentum Cup)

Yaseen Vallie , Qaasim Adams  & Dane Piedt  were part of the successful Nashua Cape Cobras squad that went on to tie the Momentum 50 over Cup with The bizHub Lions. Vallie was instrumental in the middle order guiding the Cape side into the final with a well paced 68 against the Titans after his senior partners collapsed in the chase, definitely a star for the future. Michael Erlank (Chevrolet Knights) who replaced Dean Elgar after his call up to the National Test side played superbly as well with good knocks at the top of the order. At the same time former SA under 19 top order batsman Colin Ackermann received his call up to make his debut for the Chevrolet Warriors after a consistent run in the First class arena.

USSASA Schools Cricket

We’d like to extend our congratulations to young wicket keeper batsman Clyde Fortuin who was selected in the SA u/19 Schools Cricket team, after a successful Coca Cola week with Western Province. Fortuin is perhaps one of the brightest w/k batsman after Quinton de Kock and has already made a name for himself in the Cape with 2 centuries in the Western Province 1A Premier League at the age of 17. Another young star is top order batsman Jurie Snyman from Easterns. Jurie has broken into the Easterns amateur side at the tender age of 17 an has already blasted his way to being the top run getter in that side.

UNIVERSITIES WEEK

The University of the Western Cape (WP 1A Club Champions 2011/2012) went all the way to the final of the Varsity week but lost to NMMU. The Cape side was however rewarded with five of their players managing to make the SA University Team including 2 D&P boys, Esmund Van Wyk and Ashley Fernandez. Another outstanding DP player was Maties top order batsman Uwe Birkenstock who scored the only century at the week. Uwe also ended up as top run getter in the competition and thus earned himself a place in the South African University Team for 2012.

We would like to take this opportunity to once again thank you for your on-going support of D&P Cricket Brand. Keep training hard and who knows... It might just be you that will be making the D&P Cricket highlights review list at the end of 2013!
